Have you ever gone to the doctor for a cold or flu... and without
giving it a second thought, the doctor prescribed an antibiotic?
The antibiotic doesn't affect the virus that caused your cold or flu. The
doctor meant to protect you from a secondary infection. But that secondary
infection doesn't exist yet. And those germs now have a chance of mutating
and becoming resistant to the antibiotic.
This over-reliance on antibiotics is a growing threat to the
treatment of human illness. And may render previously treatable diseases
untreatable through traditional means.
A large part of the problem is the overuse of antibiotics to treat bacteria
and other microorganisms that are quite resilient. They can develop ways
to survive drugs meant to kill or weaken them. In addition, research has
shown that antibiotics are given to patients in excess of the
recommendations of federal and other health care organizations. And are
often
prescribed to treat viral conditions that don't respond to antibiotics at
all.
Another contributor to this growing threat is the use of antibiotic drugs
on food-producing animals. This may cause microbes to become resistant to
drugs used to treat human
illness. A large percentage of bacteria that cause infections in hospitals
are resistant to at least one of the drugs most commonly used to treat
them. And some organisms are resistant to all approved antibiotics.
They
have to be treated using experimental and potentially toxic drugs.
With mounting concerns and potential health hazards looming, it is becoming
increasingly important to seek ways to strengthen your body's natural
ability to fight illness and increase overall health. A complementary
approach that may be ideal is to support immune function and help restore
natural defenses that already exist in perhaps the most effective "
antibiotic" known: a healthy human body!
